What is Domestic Travel Insurance?

Domestic travel insurance protects you against unforeseen circumstances during trips within Australia.

While Medicare or your private health insurance may provide cover for certain medical treatments in Australia, domestic travel insurance adds another layer of protection by covering other elements of your trip. It helps shield you from costs related to trip cancellations, personal items and luggage, personal liability and more.

Tick’s domestic travel insurance is designed to keep things simple and transparent. This means you can travel within Australia with less worrying about the “what-ifs”.

What are the Key Benefits of Our Domestic Travel Insurance Policies?

Many Australians overlook travel insurance for domestic trips. But unexpected events can occur anywhere.

Subject to sub-limits, terms, conditions or exclusions, Domestic travel insurance could be a lifesaver in the event of:

  • Trip Cancellation: Life doesn’t always go as planned. If you fall ill, experience a family emergency, or face a natural disaster, cancelling your trip could leave you out of pocket. Tick’s domestic travel insurance can reimburse you for already paid non-refundable accommodation and transport costs. Depending on the policy you choose, you can be covered for up to $20,000 in cancellation expenses.
  • Trip Cancellation Due to Covid-19: If you fall ill with Covid-19 and need to cancel or reschedule your trip, we can cover you for up to $2,500. This benefit is available on our Standard and Top domestic travel insurance plans.
  • Rental Vehicle Excess: Road trips are a classic Australian experience, but accidents can happen. Damage to rental vehicles could leave you having to pay a high excess. Our domestic travel insurance can cover you for up to $4,000 rental vehicle excess costs, saving you from a financial headache.
  • Lost, Damaged or Stolen Personal Items: Imagine losing your phone, camera, or other valuables on your trip. Domestic travel insurance may cover the cost of replacing or repairing your items up to $7,500. This means you’re not left out-of-pocket, or without essentials while travelling domestically.
  • Delayed, Damaged or Lost Baggage: If your luggage is lost, damaged, or stolen while travelling domestically, our policies can cover the costs of replacement up to $7,500 with top level of cover.
  • Adventure Activities: All our domestic travel insurance policies include coverage for a range of activities. You can be covered for accidental death, disability and personal liability for activities including hiking, snorkelling and bungee jumping (provided they are within safety guidelines). You can enjoy your adventures knowing you’re protected with Tick.
  • Personal Liability: If, during your trip, you become legally liable for accidentally damaging or losing someone else's property or injuring someone, personal liability cover can cover up to $1,500,000 in Standard and Top policies. Our domestic travel insurance policies can cover you for up to $1,500,000 personal liability cover.
  • Accidental Death and Disability: Our Standard and Top plans can cover up to $15,000 for accidental death or permanent disability while travelling domestically. We also provide vital support for you and your loved ones during a difficult time.
  • Natural Disasters: Australia’s weather can include bushfires, floods, and storms. If your travel plans are disrupted by natural disasters, our domestic travel insurance can cover up to $20,000 (depending on the plan you select) for cancellation, emergency accommodation and alternative transportation.

  • Standard Cover: Our Standard plan expands on Basic cover. It includes additional features such as rental car excess. It includes higher limits on benefits such as baggage cover. Standard cover offers a wide range of benefits without costing as much as Top cover.

Why Aren’t Medical Expenses Covered?

Domestic travel insurance generally does not include coverage for medical expenses as a result of emergencies, accidents, or illnesses. This is because travel insurers are prohibited from doing so by Medicare and Private Health Insurance Acts.

Our domestic travel insurance policies have been designed to complement Medicare and private health insurance benefits. Our policies focus on non-medical coverage such as trip cancellations, personal liability, and lost or damaged belongings.

For those planning a domestic cruise, however, medical coverage is often necessary as Medicare does not apply once at sea. A cruise travel insurance can be better suited if your travels include a cruise. Click here to learn more and get a quote.

What Extra Cover Options Are There?

Tick offers optional extras to further tailor your domestic travel insurance policy:
  • Winter Sports Cover: Visiting the southern states for skiing or snowboarding? This add-on provides coverage for equipment, lift passes, and unforeseen cancellations related to winter sports activities.
  • Natural Disasters Cover: Travelling to parts of Australia prone to bushfires, floods, or storms? This option helps protect you against disruptions caused by natural disasters. This includes cover for additional accommodation and transport expenses.
  • Excess Waiver Option: You can choose to eliminate the standard excess on claims, saving you from out-of-pocket costs if you need to make a claim.

How to Choose the Best Domestic Travel Insurance for Australia

When selecting a policy for your travels within Australia, consider the following:
  1. Coverage Needs: Think about your activities, destinations, and potential risks. For instance, a road trip may require coverage for rental car excess, while a domestic cruise might need our specialised cruise policy.
  2. Policy Limits and Exclusions: Read the PDS carefully to understand what’s included. Be aware of sub-limits for certain items, such as baggage or valuables, and exclusions for existing medical conditions or adventure activities.
  3. Cost vs. Benefits: Look for affordable options without compromising on essential features. Compare premiums against the range of benefits provided to ensure you’re getting value for money.
  4. Customer Reviews and Awards: Check reviews and industry recognition. Tick Travel Insurance has earned several awards for customer service and quality policies. You can claim with confidence knowing we’re here to support you.

  • Non-compliance with Policy Terms: Failing to follow local laws or rental agreements.
  • Natural Disasters Already Known: Events that were publicly announced before your policy was purchased are not covered.
  • Losses Due to Negligence: Claims arising from unattended belongings or failing to take reasonable precautions to secure your items may not be covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Tick Travel Insurance? We’ve answered some of the most common ones below.

Do I need domestic travel insurance if I already have private health insurance?

Private health insurance only covers medical treatments and does not protect against trip cancellations, lost belongings, or rental car excess. Tick’s domestic travel insurance fills these gaps.

Does domestic travel insurance cover all adventure activities?

Not all activities are covered. Check the PDS for a detailed list of included and excluded activities. Only accidental death, permanent disability and personal liability is covered for listed activities.

Can I get travel insurance for domestic cruises?

Yes! It’s important to note that Medicare and Private Health cover may not extend to cruises, even within Australian waters.

Tick’s Cruise Travel Insurance helps you prepare for medical and non-medical issues not included in Medicare or private health insurance. Click here to find out more.
